Guest Post: Britt of Miss Vicious Knits

Since I would get really, really boring if I had to come up with all the posts for this month by myself, and I have some amazing, wonderful people on my blogroll, I thought I’d invite some guests to come and post this month, to introduce you to some potentially new-to-you friends!

First up is Britt of Miss Vicious Knits. Britt apparently knits like the wind, if the amount of projects she posts is any indication, and has an absolutely adorable cat. (These are the things that I find important.) Read on for more from Britt, and follow her on Twitter with @BrittVicious.

I’d like to start this post by saying that I’m the queen of procrastination and also quite skilled at going off on tangents. I’ve had WEEKS to write this post and get it to Amy and yet I haven’t. She told me I could write about anything I wanted, including (at my suggestion) otters and lots of curse words, and yet I found myself not putting my little fingers on my keyboard to type up something for her. Instead, I procrastinated by knitting socks.

Now, for those of you who don’t know me/follow my hilarious tweets/read my non-sensical knitting blog, I live in San Diego. And I’m sure you’ve been paying more attention to the weather where you live or the weather that is happening in the North East. Rightly so! Who cares about my weather? Well, I care. It’s been fucking hot here. Yesterday it was over 90 degrees. In November.

Let me repeat that. Ninety Degrees. In November. What the unholy fuck is going on here? (Don’t be a smart ass. I’m well aware of “Global Warming”.)

I’m still in the “it’s too hot to knit cardigans and scarves or mittens” mode. I’m knitting socks. Plain, boring as hell, socks. And I’m actually really loving it. I had at one point blogged about my fear of socks. You put them on your feet. You walk around ON THEM. You put so much time and effort into them and then they get HOLES. And to hell with learning how to darn socks! I’m lazy. But never the less, I was determined to learn how to knit them.

So for the past week or so, I’ve completed two pairs of socks. They’re boring and vanilla but don’t they show off the yarn wonderfully? I mean seriously. Look at those GQ mother fuckers. The blue/purple pair are made out of Zauberball and the delightfully pinkish orange pair are made out of Candy Skein.

But Sunday, I got the worst news a girl could hear from her boyfriend/unofficial fiancé. Or their fiancé. (If fiancé, then CONGRATS! He liked it so much he put a ring on it! You go girl!) I got the “My mother is coming to town” news. Now, my boyfriend/unofficial fiancé have been together for four years now and I’ve NEVER met his mother. So what did I do? I panicked, thought of all the cleaning I needed to do, panicked on Twitter, poured myself a glass of wine, and decided I was going to knit her a pair of socks. Because in my head, knitting something for the woman would SURELY win her over! So here I am, knitting socks for the woman. A woman who I have never met, and I’m living in sin with her son, taking care of her grand babies and trying desperately for her to like me.

I’m putting a lot of pressure on a pair of socks. The socks didn’t do anything to deserve this. In fact, I kind of feel bad for the socks. Because even if things don’t go well between me and my potential Future Mother In Law, she’s eventually going to leave town and I won’t have to see her for awhile. But the socks? They’re stuck with her.

When these socks are finished and she has them on her feet, I’ll be back to festivus/Christmas knitting. Time for more quick knit gifts and panic and a huge deadline. The only reason I’m looking forward to the Winter holidays is the hope of cooler weather which brings the need for hand knits. And then I can wear more than just my hand knit socks out in public! Cardigans and scarves and shawls! Oh how I’ve missed them!

What are you knitting for Christmas/Festivus? Do you have a quick knit that you use for gifts?

I see, you have a stressful time in front of you 😉 !
Little knowledge from somebody who lived in ” sin” with man for 7 years and is now with same man married for 24 years.
There are not many mother in laws out there you can win over, but anger and frustration makes you knit faster. You can attack the stitches, you just push the needles violently into the next stitch and think that it is not the sock which is in front of you. :))
Just kidding, she will probably be very nice.
    By the way nice socks!

  2. […] and I think you would too. Many, many thanks to Joanna, Teresa, Sarah, Stefanie, Kira, Marsha, and Britt for spending some time here this […]
