Seed stitch is not photogenic and things to distract you from the fact that I have been quiet

1. No, really. Seed stitch, miles upon miles of seed stitch, just really isn’t that fabulous to look at. My mom’s cardigan is coming along; I do feel as though I may have been a bit delusional in thinking that I’d finish it by Halloween, but crazier things have happened. It’s more of a goal date, anyway. But here, just to show you what you’re probably not missing, I give you, Seed Stitch!

Was it good for you?

2. Cookie A’s new sock knitting book, Knit.Sock.Love is available for pre-order of the printed edition (signed, even!) and has the option for an immediately gratifying PDF download. Cookie herself explains how this book is different from Sock Innovation (Interweave, 2009) in this blog post, and you can get a preview of all of the socks in Knit.Sock.Love at the ordering page.

Oh yeah, the socks on the cover? They might look a little familiar.

3. Are you getting ready for Halloween? Making your own costume? What’s your costume? And yes, I demand pictures if you have them. Quirky Knit Girl Ivy shares with us how Target doesn’t want you to DIY Halloween this year. I say “baloney.” Some of my favorite Halloween costumes were hand-made, like the year that I was a flapper. Okay, the two years that I was a flapper—I was about 8 or 9 the first time, and my mom made my dress. I was about 26 or 27 the second time, and I made my dress. My mom’s was WAY better, but I didn’t profess to being much of a sewer-type at the time. Anyway, if you aren’t making a Halloween costume for yourself (or perhaps for a little someone), have you ever made your own?

  1. Ooh I’m doing seed stitch right now, too! On a cute Owl Tuque for my cousin’s soon-to-be-born little boy.

Also, I don’t think any retailer wants you to DIY your Halloween costumes, except maybe Hobby Lobby. πŸ˜‰

I like the look of seed stitch, but the 250+ stitches that I’m working in seed stitch are taking forever!

And there’s a difference between wanting you to buy their costumes and passively/actively saying “look how much DIY costumes suck.” πŸ˜‰

I’ve always done DIY halloween costumes. It’s way more fun for the kids now. We’ve done Thing 1 and Thing 2 (with hand knit hats); Luke and Leia; Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Rocky, our big black lab; Cinderella and Bob the Builder. This year we’re doing Star Wars. Yoda for Baby O; Darth Vader for the E-minion; and a Jawa (the fixer dudes who sell droids) for the I-minion.

Ooooh those Star Wars-themed costumes sound so cute! You’ll definitely have to share pictures somewhere. πŸ˜€

  3. I will never forget going as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz when I was four. My mom sewed the blue gingham dress and braided my brown-red hair. I carried a stuffed dog with me all day. The biggest, most memorable part, though, was that we couldn’t find sparkly shoes anywhere (hey, it was the 80s), so she bought a pair of patent leather pink shoes and spent weeks gluing on pink sequins with Elmer’s glue. She positioned each into place with a toothpick. By the end of the day on Halloween, nearly all of them had fallen off. I won’t ever forget watching her place each of those sequins, though, night after night. That was love!

Aww, that’s awesome! Way to go, mom.
