Catch-all

Inspired by a post by John and Sherry over at Young House Love (which any of DIYers should be reading, for serious), I went over to Ethan Allen and took their What’s Your Style? quiz. Apparently my signature style is “Elegance.”

Classic design elements, yes, I do like those. Luxurious and beautifully liveable… maybe? I think you lost me at cosmopolitan, Ethan Allen.

This is not really my style. There’s nothing wrong with it as a style, but it’s definitely not my style. I mean, consider that this is currently the color scheme going on in my bathroom.

So I retook their quizzy thing, and even though I picked some of the same images, I got the Vintage result, which yielded some options closer to my actual style.

I love light. I have a bad habit of taking photos of various light fixtures. I love things that add light to a room, with brighter colors to bounce sunlight pouring through big windows and reflective surfaces on furnishings. That top image is a bit too clean for me–needs some crazy wall art or giant pink gerbera daisies or something. The bottom one is really close, although I’ve discovered a general distaste for the run-of-the-mill floral print that I really can’t explain. If that chair was orange or something, I’d be all over it.

My mom and I (really, my mom, but I was there to… direct?) made loads of progress on the apartment this weekend, so hopefully there will be some more in-progress shots soon. Meanwhile…

The yarn buying has bested me AGAIN.

This and the one below are from a destash, helping out a knitter who lost her job in the Borders debacle, as I’ve come to call it. (and, you know, they’re pretty.)

This was sent to me by a friend and therefore does not count against the “no buying yarn” rule, but it is scrumptious so I figured I’d share it.

This was on sale and is Ravenclaw colors, AND it’s DK weight and I don’t have a lot of DK. (Look at me rationalizing to myself.)

THIS IS FOR A PARTICULAR PROJECT, A VERY PARTICULAR PROJECT, AND THEREFORE IS EXEMPT FROM THE RULES.

This… I just couldn’t resist.

This part of the post is brought to you by “look how awesome wood floors make for yarn backdrops.” Seriously. And finally…

Remember that sweater dress I’ve been working on for the last few weeks? Except that I wasn’t actually working on it for the last few weeks, because OMG my brain, my brain has not been working at all. And I’m at a portion in the yoke where I need my brain to be working, because I have to make sure that this thing is going to fit my upper body. It’s close to done, and I’m close to the point where I can get back into concentrating on it and talking about it. Hopefully with something resembling coherency.

  1. Oh man, that middle room picture is perfect for me, as in, it’s what I wish my place looked like. You will see when you visit that I have an excessive amount of stuff that just takes over. There is one part of the apartment that, if photographed from the right angle, could so land me on Hoarders. O.o But something empty and clean (and turquoise!) like that room is dreamy.

I share your aversion to generic floral prints, at least on furniture. I prefer solids or stripes. EA says I’m an Explorer, which is actually probably pretty spot-on. Except that, as an Explorer, I wouldn’t furnish my place with “furnishings and accessories that conjure images of world travel” that I purchased at EA, I’d actually go on the travels and buy them there!

All of your yarns are pretty! I have somehow managed to disconnect “buying yarn from friends who need to destash” from “buying yarn” in general. I mentally file it away under “helping someone out” instead of “adding to the pile of yarn that will someday smother me”. Similarly, souvenir yarns are filed under “souvenirs” and certainly not “yarn purchases”. Definitely delusional!

That second room photo is really nice! I just need a little more oomph in some regards. πŸ˜€ I understand your aversion to stuff–one of the things we’re discovering is that while I have more liveable space in this apartment, I have less storage space, and that is a bit of a problem. But I’m working with it, and my mom helped me out a lot.

Hey, I share this part of your delusions, so we’re good there. πŸ˜€

I got Modern. Can’t say I disagree, but I think I prefer a bit more whimsy than what they define as modern. (Uh, aren’t there colors in modernity?)

All of the yarn pretties made me drool a little. I’m taking every iota of self-control I have and using it to pack instead of knit the collar of my cardi (which I decided is going to be in seed st, not garter. I think?) Still haven’t told the yarn that I’m going to have to separate them. But new that they’ll get a new mate soon should cheer them up πŸ™‚

That was one of the things I noticed overall–there’s no bright pops of color like I like. I guess if you can afford Ethan Allen, you’re predisposed to muted tones? I don’t know.

Good luck with the packing! I know I avoided it by knitting more than one evening. πŸ˜€

  3. Apparently, I lean toward Elegance, as well. Interesting. A little Romance, and Vintage, too.

Yeah, it is interesting. And one has to keep in mind the very defined audience that Ethan Allen is going for. πŸ˜€

That’s a great color for a couch. Although that wallpaper may give me nightmares.
