Almost FO: Nemesis socks

If you’ve been following along with the Sock Saga for this month, you’ll know that I very nearly gave up on these socks a few days ago. I probably should have, now that I think about it. You see, at that point, I had a sneaking suspicion that the second of the socks would come out a bit too big. And I’d mostly decided to leave the first sock ungrafted because I thought it was too small. I sat down on my couch this afternoon determined to finish the second sock. I’m in the toe decreases. It’s definitely too big.

I used a 2.25mm needle for the first sock, which is a US 1. Normally, that wouldn’t have been a problem, but something about this pattern and this yarn and that needle size came out just a wee bit on the small side.

So I thought I’d gone up to a 2.5mm needle for the second sock, when in actuality it’s a 2.75mm. That’s a US 2. The second sock, while mostly fitting, is just baggy enough that it could cause problems when I wear the socks in shoes. And there are giant holes in the picked up stitches for the heel flap.

The best option here is to frog both of them and re-knit them on 2.5mm needles, which are US 1½…at some point in the future that is not right now. Since that certainly is not going to happen in the next 48 or so hours, I’m calling August’s socks done, for now.
