DIY Crescent Moon Wreath

Just in time for spooky season, I made this DIY crescent moon wreath! Here’s a not super thorough walk through of how I did it.

Gathering Materials

Last year, I met up with a friend for an outdoors adventure gathering sticks in a local park. Get you a friend who will join you for stick gathering when you have a half-cooked idea to make a wreath with actual sticks (opposed to a store bought wreath or more traditional and easy to manipulate material). And then I let those sticks sit for a year because motivation is fickle AF.

I bought at wire wreath form and faux flowers at Joann Fabrics (also a year ago so the particular flowers I used in this one may not be available anymore). I fully intended to make this a full circle wreath at the time.

But then I came across a TikTok tutorial for making a crescent wreath and knew that was what these sticks were meant to be. I used my not totally sufficient wire cutter pliers and a lot of brute strength to cut the parts of the wreath form, and shaped the ends with floral tape. I do not recommend, get some floral wire, but I was working with what I had.

Making the Crescent Moon Wreath

I began laying the sticks on the form, overlapping and intertwining where I could (when they were bendy enough). Once I’d placed about 75% of the sticks, I took black ribbon and began wrapping the sticks into place, cinching it as I went to add tension. I added the rest of the sticks in to fill in spots where the form was more visible in the back.

Then I snipped apart the flowers and started placing them until I had a configuration that I liked. I stuck them into the sticks and used the wire ends of the flowers to help secure them. I didn’t use any hot glue or fixative at all in this project, partly so that I can return the sticks to nature at some point and partly because I am lazy and didn’t want to deal with it.

I’m keeping my spooky-season decorating more minimal this year for a variety of reasons, but there are more plans in the works! Stay tuned.
